Voyageurs edged by Eagles

LAC LA BICHE – It might be time to cue the Phil Collins track. The Portage College Voyageurs Men's Soccer Team can most definitely feel it coming in the air tonight (or maybe the afternoon). Fresh off a disappointing road game against Lakeland College last Sunday, the Voyageurs returned home to the Bold Center Soccer Field Saturday afternoon and played a spirited affair against The King's University (TKU) Eagles. Five minutes into the game, they even found themselves ahead after James Ruhiga scored a beautiful goal on a great setup from Mukire Mateso. The Eagles responded soon after, with Harjep Dhanoa scoring the equalizer eight minutes later. From there, the game was a whirlwind, thanks to the impressive speed of both teams and the howling wind which got stronger as the game dragged on. Noah Bilodeau notched the eventual game winner at the 40-minute mark for TKU.

Despite the 2-1 loss, Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa was upbeat after the game. "It was definitely an improvement over last time," he said. "Last weekend at Lakeland it was a tough game, there wasn't much cohesion within the team. Today, it was very positive. They communicated well and we created enough chances to win. It's just unfortunate that we didn't convert them." Although they haven't tasted it yet, Mukuninwa is confident that victory is in the air, and maybe even just around the corner. "We can see in the boys' faces that they're a little bit disappointed for losing it today because they felt that that's a game that they had," he said. "We'll bounce back and go at again next week."

Augustin Mateso was named Player of the Game for the Voyageurs while Jonathan Ezoua was named Player of the Game for the Eagles. The Voyageurs next get a chance to go for the win on Saturday when they travel to Edmonton to take on Concordia. They will then return home to take on Keyano on Sunday Oct. 3.
