Late goals from Huskies sink Voyageurs

LAC LA BICHE – The Portage College Voyageurs could be forgiven for thinking that Elvis was in the building – or in this case the stands – crooning "Heartbreak Hotel" Sunday afternoon.

Fresh off their first win of the season versus Concordia the day before, the men's soccer team came oh so close to their first-ever two game undefeated streak at the Bold Center Soccer Field versus the Keyano College Huskies. In a well-played and highly entertaining back-and-forth game, both teams exchanged glorious scoring chances before Tom Wessel finally notched the eventual game winner in the 87th minute on a penalty kick. Dashawn Kennedy scored late in added time to seal a 2-0 win for the Huskies.

Michael Musanza was named Player of the Game for the Voyageurs while Ayman Hassan was similarly honoured for the Huskies.

"We created enough chances to win and I think for sure we should've scored a couple of goals," said Voyageurs Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa after the game. "That was a tough one to lose."

Despite the difficult loss, the Voyageurs can still make the playoffs with a win on the road on Friday against Grande Prairie. Their head coach is optimistic his troops can build upon their strong weekend performance.

"We played well in both games," said Mukuninwa of the Concordia and Keyano matches. "It felt good to beat a good Concordia team. The fear was always that we'd come out flat. We started out a bit hesitant

but we picked it up and we played well enough to win. Next week if we win we're still in the playoffs so our destiny is still in our hands more or less."
