Voyageurs push for first win, fall to Eagles

LAC LA BICHE – Last week, they scored their first ever regular season goal. This week, they almost got their first ever win. On a blustery day at the Bold Center Soccer Field Saturday afternoon, the Portage College Voyageurs women's squad put up a valiant effort – and even held the lead for a good portion of the game – before eventually succumbing to The King's University (TKU) Eagles 2-1. "This was their best game ever," beamed their proud head coach Kika Mukuninwa. "They worked hard. You know, last week against NAIT they kind of ran us out of the park. We took that to heart and the ladies have been training well and it showed today."

A week after scoring the Voyageurs' historic first goal, Ashley Tweedy continued her torrid pace, notching her second of the season barely nine minutes into the game on an impressive rush. Portage took the 1-0 lead into halftime and spent a good part of the second half clipping the Eagles' wings before Breanna Johnston got TKU on the scoreboard and Chastity Pete potted the winner at the 71-minute mark. Miriam Kabonesa played a strong game for the Voyageurs and was named Player of the Game for Portage while Jennifer Gallup was equally impressive and was named Player of the Game for the Eagles.

Mukuninwa sees lots of positives that his team can take into their next games next weekend. "We scored the first goal and they never gave up and they looked good today so it was a good game for the ladies," he said.  "They created some chances and now we're just going to work on finishing more of those chances but we're getting there." The Voyageurs are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Edmonton to take on Concordia. Their next home game is Sunday Oct. 3 against Keyano.
