Voyageurs battle but the Huskies prove to be too strong

LAC LA BICHE – The battered and bruised Portage College Voyageurs Women's Soccer Team gave it their all Sunday afternoon but in the end, they came up a bit short.

Coming off a 15-0 loss to Concordia University of Edmonton the day before, the short-staffed Voyageurs did their best to keep the Keyano College Huskies from howling but eventually succumbed 8-0 at the Bold Centre Soccer Field. Natalie Orellana led the way for Keyano with three goals while Huskies' Player of the Game Sophie Griffiths added two. Voyageurs Player of the Game Sydney Kushnerik was spectacular in net, stopping 26 of 34 Huskies' shots, some from close in.

"Considering that we had very few subs and lots of injuries, we worked extremely hard and all of the coaching staff were proud of the efforts." said Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa. "And as a team, they played well collectively."

As the Voyageurs prepare for their final game of the season next Friday in Grande Prairie, Mukuninwa is optimistic his players will continue to improve and come back next year ready to take the next step.

"They were able to keep their spirits up, there were no down moments," he said. 'They were just there from the beginning so it was a good game to watch and they'll grow from this."
