VOYAGEURS FIND GLIMPSES OF HOPE IN LOSS
EDMONTON – Move over Bradley Cooper. The Portage College Voyageurs are borrowing the Silver Linings Playbook for this year. The inexperienced women's soccer squad is focused on making small improvements every game and being harder to play against than they were at the start of the season. By that measurement, Macky Singh's players are moving the yardsticks little by little.
Fresh of 16-0 and 9-0 losses at home, the Voyageurs played their first road game of the season Sept. 21, losing 9-0 to The King's University (TKU) Eagles. While the scoreboard didn't reflect it, the Voyageurs' head coach noticed small improvement in some of his team members' play.
"We're not quite there in terms of being able to compete kind of thing but within our own team's performance, there was a significant improvement in terms of some of the players' individual development," said Singh.
Paige Colgan and Sara Muzyka – with two goals apiece – led the way for the Eagles while Portage's Esther Bylsma stopped 14 of the 23 shots fired her way.
With back-to-back matches this coming weekend against Northwestern Polytechnic, Singh will once again be focused on signs of progress in his young group.
"Our goal right now is to make sure we keep our shape and keep it tight and maintain the motivation for our players," he said. "We want to see individual improvement each game as they go along. That's what we'll be looking at."
